Tips for Formal Essays
Writing Organization
Type paper on a computer; print it out on standard, white 8.5” x 11”.
-First page Heading: (Name, Date, Teacher, Class w/ Period) DS on left side
This information may also be included on a cover page
Often asked to be have your last name and a page number at the top right of every page
-Title: Centered and Bold, Referencing the Thesis Statement
-Type: Double Spaced, 12pt. Times Font with in 1” margins all around
-Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks
-Indent paragraphs ½”
-Write in 3rd Person -Write in Active voice, not passive voice. Avoid imperative voice (rude).
Content
-Introduction Paragraph/Conclusions
-Typically, includes the title of the written work and/or the author that is being analyzed
-Thesis should be clear, parallel and visible throughout the entire essay, parallel in structure and in content.
-Everything in your document should be related clearly to your main thesis.
-Option for writing each: introduce, expand/justify (support), conclude
-Body Paragraphs
Typically, you will first make the topic clear, then expand upon it (support), and finally sum up, tying everything back to the topic.
- Transitions
Smoothly move from sentence to sentence; paragraph to paragraph
(Use transition words/phrases)
-Every paragraph should have at least two supporting pieces of information.
(2+ facts, quotes, examples, statistics, illustrations, comparisons, analogies, anecdotes, etc.)
-Avoid redundancy - Be clear and concise (If you can say it in two words, do not use twenty.)
Mechanics
-Capitalize sentences and punctuate the end effectively:
Declarative (Statement) and Imperative (Command) = .
Exclamatory (Emotion) = ! Interrogatory (Question) = ?
-Do Not Use Contractions, Slang, /Colloquial Phrases:(don’t, isn’t, ain’t, "going the extra mile")
-Using commas, colons, semi-colons, dashes, hyphens, and ending marks correctly.
-Direct Quotes need attribution to the author/speaker and quotation marks.
-MLA Citations: (author’s last name page number) and Citation Page
